Evansville Top 40 Radio Station Hot 96 WSTO-FM felt compelled to try to make a difference.
On Friday 11/19/04 Morning the #1 rated Booker and Diane morning show rallied the community to achieve exceptional support for the unfortunate victims of a house fire that cost them their home and 3 children.
This is the Headline story in the Tri-state area (Southern Illinois, North Kentucky, Southern Indiana.)
Laura Duncan, the mother of the injured children and the 3 who perished in the fire, joined us from one of her children's Louisville hospital room. In addition, her sister Andrea and Minister were also on the phone.
After Laura spoke in graphic detail about the events of the Wednesday morning fire that took the lives of 18 year old Adam, 22 month-old Christian, and 6 year-old Brianna Duncan, Andrea then told her for the first time what the community has done to offer assistance. Laura discovered she has a temporary home, furniture, and that two funds have been set up in the family name to offer financial assistance.
According to Andrea, the one thing Laura desperately needed was a mini-van to transport the children to and from Louisville. Their only vehicle was destroyed in the fire. Yesterday afternoon after speaking with Andrea, I contacted Norman Boggess Chevrolet in Madisonville at asked them if they would help. They were happy to do so and on Friday morning, new owners Bruce and Chris Browning announced live that they would be providing a $30,000.00 Pontiac Ventura free of charge to the family. In addition, the dealership agreed to cover the cost of getting the vehicle licensed, pay all taxes, and assist with insurance coverage.
Laura was brought to tears by the goodwill gesture and expressed her immense thanks. After the story aired, we received calls from listeners offering free burial monuments for the children, groceries, home health nursing for the kids at no charge, insurance coverage, and bedding.
This story will be featured on ABC25, Newschannel 8 (FOX), and 14WFIE (NBC) in all of their newscasts Friday evening. In addition, the Courier & Press will print the story in their Saturday edition.
Although unintentional, this was a quite ironic prelude to "A Wish For Christmas" An annual undertaking at WSTO to help those less fortunate in the community have a better holiday season.
The New Hot 96, WSTO, is live, local, and cares about our community.
