November 30, 2004 (Press Release) --
I have heard the newest browncow song Raise mast, and it is different from earlier browncow productions. But still very browncowish, no doubt about that.
In my opinion, a browncow song is often an expression of two opposites drawing a contrasting soundscape. Like, for example, the two melodies in iamdirty, maybe not obviously apart until the instrumental end uncovers the song´s schizofrenic foundation to your brain. One line is white and one is black. Mixed they express one whole opposite picture. Not a flowing picture like Bach's inventions, but as if the song was inspired by a Bach invention.
Raise mast has the schizofrenic foundation, and if iamdirty is inspired by J S Bach, then Raise mast must be too. Unlike iamdirty, which is a smooth and melodious song behind the barbed wire guitars, Raise mast is almost unmelodious in its two contrasting melodies, as if the piece of art wanted to provoke an anticlimax with Per Bronco Karlsson singing "Raise mast and let the anchor go" on top of that wah wah guitar, present but living in another song.
But most of all it´s a pirate song! A friend told me that he saw Per Bronco Karlsson singing this song live with another band some years ago. Per was dressed as a pirate and his guitar was plugged into an old radio. But that´s only what I heard...
