TACOMA, WA - Divers Ecological Society (DES), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity, with support from the Kooley family of Day Island BoatWorks, has located to an office at the Narrows Marina. “We are pleased to be able to help Divers Ecological Society succeed with their environmental goals and we support their volunteer efforts to protect our marine environment and improve our local watersheds,” said Lee Ann Kooley, Day Island BoatWorks. The help of business owners and other concerned individuals augments the efforts of Divers Ecological’s vision to positively impact the environmental health and marine habitats of Puget Sound through mapping, monitoring, educating, and removing debris.
Divers Ecological Society is also pleased to announce that they were recently a second time recipient of a $2,500 Splash Grant from the City of Tacoma Environmental Services Department. The money will used for environmental education programs and events designed to engage community members and scuba divers to clean up debris at popular shoreline locations throughout the City of Tacoma.

The DES volunteer efforts began some years ago when a group of ecologically minded divers found the nearshore habitats of Puget Sound littered by broken glass, octopus living in bottles with golf balls for play toys, and malformed fish schooling amongst discarded car batteries and other pollutants. The efforts of the Society are guided by their Board of Directors and their President, Desmond Policani. The Society is actively seeking donations of scuba gear, office equipment, office supplies, and general operating funds. Volunteer and event information can be found on their website at http://www.diversecological.5u.com or by calling (253) 566-DIVE.
