Best and Worst Train Wreck of 2004
Best: Martha Stewart
After all the Martha-haters gloated when the lifestyle maven was slapped with a five month prison sentence for obstruction of justice, it appears Ms. Stewart will get the last laugh. The tough woman, whom many predicted to crack in the slammer, has made the best of the situation (curtains on the jail window? Cooking lessons in the clink's kitchen?). She will now emerge, more than likely, bigger than she was when she went in. TV show deals, a possible prison memoir and certainly some juicy stories will be gobbled up upon her release. To use a Martha-esque phrase, she's turning lemons into lemonade and now has got the street cred of Snoop Dogg. We're just waiting to see if John Waters taps her for his next project a la Patty Hearst-- now that would be a "good thing."

Worst: Courtney Love
Oh Courtney! Where do we begin? There was the drug arrest; the nutty, flashing David Letterman appearance; the assault charges; the bizarre, rambling, psychotic interviews; the flippant courtroom behavior; the loss of custody of her child, Francis Bean; and that incident in Wendy's where, she again, flashed for cameras. And that's just some of the 40-year old singer's shenanigans. Though there was a can't-look-away theater aspect to all of her drama, she was just too scary and self-destructive. Her record flopped and finally, finally, she had to chill out in rehab. But, Love has proven to be a survivor. There may be a second coming. Just keep her away from Martha Stewart.
