Annandale, VA – December 30, 2004 -- In the Washington D.C area there are so many youth that lack access to the resources that have contributed to the success of so many. These youth lack access to resources that will motivate them and prepare them for college, professional development, and the opportunity to experience other cultures outside of their own environment. What is our county doing about this issue? It seems that we have organizations, which appear to have the mission of alleviating these issues, yet are they really reaching out to the population? On September 13, 2004, a new local nonprofit organization, ETE received its 501 (c) (3) designation. There is so much out there that ETE can do to assist the nation’s youth. “Child poverty is associated with lower academic achievement, which leads to lower skills and lifetime earnings, and therefore reduced overall economic productivity. Children who grow up in poverty also tend to spend time in expensive special education programs; commit more crimes, thereby draining resources from the criminal justice system and imposing societal costs; rely more on welfare and other public subsidies; and finally earn less money and pay fewer taxes as adults. One conservative estimate found that: “future losses to the economy stemming from the effects of just one year of child poverty for 14.6 million children reach as high as $177 billion.”(The Value of Investing in Youth in the Washington Metropolitan Area, Brookings Institution Center on Urban and Metropolitan Policy). The youth are key to the survival and increased prosperity of not only this region, but the country at large. Something must be done to assist these youth to becoming the successful, well-rounded, individuals that they have the capability to be. ETE prepares youth for college, introduces them to the professional world, and the international world, all while instilling the value of service to the community. No other organization has such a comprehensive program structure. ETE is a one-stop shop for success. ETE provides the following services:*College Preparatory Workshops *College Tours *Princeton Review SAT Prep Classes *Professional Development Workshops *Professional Internships *Summer Volunteering Abroad The founder of the program, Ms. Latoya Jones, is passionate and dedicated to the mission of the organization. She states, “Empowerment Through Exposure is my way of giving back to society all that others have given to me.” Ms. Jones is a graduate of Hampton University and is current in pursuit of a Masters in Public Administration. Ms. Jones has also a powerful affinity with the non-profit sector and identification with its cause, which was instilled through her education and reinforced through her long time volunteer background. Ms. Jones has also worked with Ashoka Innovators of the Public, and the Department of Labor’s Job Corps, and many other local nonprofit organizations. It is the belief of Empowerment Through Exposure that the synergy of these components will ultimately play a crucial role in developing productive, successful, well-rounded, socially conscious members of society.
