January 12, 2005 (Press Release) --
CANINE TEAMS CONTINUE TO BE CRUCIAL TOOL
IN SEARCH FOR SURVIVORS OF CALIFORNIA MUDSLIDE
January 12, 2005 – Ojai, California – As the search for victim’s of Monday’s devastating mudslide continues, the highly trained canine search teams of the National Search Dog Foundation (SDF) remain a crucial tool in locating potential survivors in the pockets of air located beneath the debris.
Eight SDF handlers from the local Ventura and Los Angeles area have been deployed to search for survivors. These Advanced FEMA Certified teams are called to search for live human scent as layers of debris are removed from the massive mound of mud and shattered homes. The dog’s unique natural ability to smell human scent and hear sound as far down as 30 feet along with their extensive training in special skills needed to transverse the shifting pile of rubble provides a valuable means of safely locating victims buried beneath. Dogs can go where it would otherwise be perilous for humans to do so.
The Search Dog Foundation is responsible for training 80% of the California’s Advanced Certified Canines Search Teams. These teams are called into action by the emergency services to find live victims in any natural or man-made disaster possible, from earthquakes to building collapses to train wrecks. Many of these dogs were once abandoned in shelters and now are helping to save lives – in other words, from rescued to rescuer.
INTERVIEWS CAN BE ARRANGED WITH SDF EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND HANDLERS
