On Saturday, February 19, 2005, at 6:00pm, The National Alliance of African American Athletes (The Alliance) will recognize another stellar group of high school athletes from across the nation for the Franklin D. Watkins Memorial Award. The award is presented each year to the nation's top African American male high school scholar athlete.
The five finalists are:
* Robert Kibble of Houston, Texas. Robert is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Chess Club, plays football and runs track at Westfield High School.
* Mohamed J. Massaquoi of Charlotte, North Carolina. Mohamed is a member of the National Honor Society, DECA, plays football for Independence High School and has a 3.75 grade point average (GPA).
* Shawn C. Oatis of Chino, California. Shawn is an inspirational speaker, a member of the Science Club, plays football and runs track for Chino High School with a 3.6 GPA.
* Vincent O. Oghobaase, II of Houston, Texas. Vincent has achieved a 3.96 GPA while playing football, basketball, and running track for Hastings High School.
* Ekom Udofia of Scottsdale, Arizona. Ekom is a member of the National Honor Society and plays defensive tackle football at Chaparral High School where he maintains a 4.2 (GPA).
The Watkins Award ceremony will be held at the Apparel Mart Hotel in Charlotte, North Carolina. Former NBA standout, John Salley, is the keynote speaker.
"The 2005 Watkins Award features another year of fine student athletes," Everette Pearsall, Executive Director of The Alliance, shares. “Each of these young men is well equipped for success academically. We have continued to recognize and honor the premier African American Scholar Athletes in the United States.”
Finalists are chosen based on their unweighted grade point average, their personal statements, extra curricular activities, community service, and letters of recommendation. Each winner will receive an award, ring, and dinner in their hometown.
Sponsors of this year’s event include Coca Cola Corporation, Dillingham & Taylor Wealth Management, LLC, Alex Haley Racing, Prestige Insurance Group, Compass, Hubbard Automotive, The Charlotte Post and Minneapolis-based Jostens Corporation who manufactures and donates the Watkins Award trophy and rings.
