January 21, 2005 (Press Release) --
Pls donate for animal vacine, shelter construction, food for domestic animals and wildlife.
Thousands of bodies are still waiting to be buried. National and international rescue efforts are focused on providing humanitarian aid. However, there is something perhaps is being overlooked, the non human victims in Aceh!
A ProFauna Indonesia team visited Aceh to survey the destruction caused by the tsunami. Led by Suparno (ProFauna Jakarta office Coordinator) assisted by Afrizal Akmal (ProFauna member Aceh) and Rudi H Putra (ProFauna member Medan). 7 of ProFauna's members who live in Aceh survived. Sadly, the remaining of the Acehnese members are unknown.
The team found 6 surviving animals in a dire and starving condition left abandoned in Wulandari mini private zoo in Banda Aceh. The species are; primate, angora cat, python, turtle and stork. The owner’s whereabouts or even if he survived the tsunami are not known. The cages were littered with debris and covered in mud.
Other critically endangered wildlife, incl orang-utans, sun bears and eagles have been discovered at this zoo. They were confiscated by the BKSDA (Council of conservation of natural resources) the Forestry Dept, and housed at BKSDA’s site in Aceh. Tragically the animal shelter has also been destroyed. Amongst the ruins of collapsed cages there is evidence of clumps of a tiger’s flesh and fur. The fate of the tiger in unknown.
The head of BKSDA Aceh, Andi Basrul, has not been found to date. 70 family members of BKSDA Aceh staff are declared missing. Their office has been destroyed.
Thousands of domestic animals, incl cows, goats, cats and dogs, which survived the tragedy are now roaming deserted ruined villages and towns. Their owners were probably killed. They are starving and are scavenging on debris and rubbish. Bodies of dead cats and goats were found on the roads, run over by passing vehicles. A potential problem of disease. Over 200 domestic animals were spotted during the team’s visit, the majority were cows followed by dogs.
 We need funds to evacuate abandoned wildlife in Wulandari mini zoo, especially made containers, transport to a rescue centre, veterinary care and rehabilition.
• We need funds to rebuild an emergency office for The forest rangers, incl office equipment (pc) to perform basic functions.
• Vaccine for domestic animals now roaming unsupervised in many scattered areas to prevent infectious disease spreading to humans.
• To build temporary animal shelters and sanctuaries and round up animals and place them in safe, enclosed areas.
ProFauna is returning to Aceh taking along a team of 12 incl vet, medical and wildlife rescue team. They will be assisted by some of their members from Medan.
