February 2, 2005 (Press Release) --
HEAVENLY RESORT LAKE TAHOE, Calif. -- Feb. 2, 2005 -- It’s only fitting that the Jeep King of the Mountain Series, professional snow racing’s most prestigious event for the past 12 years, will wrap up the 2004-2005 Skiing & Snowboarding World Championship with a photo finish featuring the world’s most elite professional ski and snowboarding racers at one of the country’s most dynamic resorts, Heavenly Lake Tahoe in Calif., on Feb. 4-5, 2005.
Following three outstanding competitions at Telluride Resort in Colorado, Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort in Utah and Mount Snow Resort in Vermont, the individual and team point standings are as tight as the finishing time differentials seen on the racecourse throughout the season. At Heavenly Lake Tahoe, the stakes grow to epic proportions as ski and snowboarders representing the U.S., Austria, Canada, France, Germany and Switzerland will be competing for a record $150,000 prize purse, King of the Mountain honors and the keys to a pair of Jeep Liberty Diesels. The races will be aired to a national viewing audience on CBS Sports on Feb. 19 and 20.
The action at Heavenly Lake Tahoe will begin with a National Open Qualifier on Friday, Feb. 4 at 10:30 a.m. Any ski or snowboard racer wishing to participate in the open qualifier may visit www.jeepsports.com or e-mail Ted Martin at ted@eclipsetv.net for more details. Unlike past years, where qualifiers were required to register as a team, this year’s format has been altered to allow participants to register and race individually. The top two qualifying skiers and snowboarders will then be paired to take part in the Skiing and Snowboarding World Championships, set for 12 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5. In addition to moving the open qualifier to an exclusively individual format, the prize money structure has changed dramatically to reward the individual versus the team as in past years.
The Jeep® King of the Mountain was established in 1993. Jeep® is the title sponsor for the Jeep King of the Mountain Series. Other marketing partners for this season include: Atomic, Columbia Sportswear Company, Edge Advanced shave gel, John Paul Mitchell Systems, Mopar, Sirius Satellite Radio and Ski Magazine.
