February 4, 2005 (Press Release) --
Supporting The Brazilian Resolution 2005.
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Jimmy Leon and I am the coordinator for an organization called African-rapport based in Hamburg, Germany. As a non-governmental international human rights organization, African-rapport has a particular and useful role to play in locating gay and lesbian rights in Africa in the consideration of human rights generally, not as special rights, but as fundamental rights ensured to each and every member of society. Amnesty International has also provided valuable support to the organization, and to those LGBT people who are among those most under threat. African-rapport supports other African organizations and encourages them to continue their struggle for their sexual rights.
We help to provide safe spaces for discussion and networking, we help to protect the space in which LGBT rights defenders can work, and by sharing its skills in research, campaigning and advocacy.
African-rapport lobbies the UN, EU by sending letters of concern and by establishing contacts outside the continent of Africa in order to create African LGBT awareness.
As part of its work to protect the human rights of refugees, African-rapport has also supported the asylum claims of people fearing persecution on the basis of their sexual orientation, as well as HIV/AIDS awareness for the LGBT community in Africa.
African-rapport together with Amnesty International USA and their networks and other organizations members around the world sustain a campaign of letter-writing, demonstrations, public events and embassy visits.
For lesbians, isolation and invisibility has meant the absence of collective identity. In the public domain there is no space for discussion of sexuality, leave alone women's sexuality. Culture, tradition, values and morals have consistently been used as tools of oppression and discrimination. Within this framework, one is marginalized as a woman and doubly so as a lesbian.
Perhaps most centrally of all, lesbian and gay rights belong on the human rights agenda because sexual orientation, like, for example, gender or race, relates to fundamental aspects of human identity. As the opening words of the UDHR affirm, human rights are founded on the concept of respect for the inherent dignity and worth of the human person.
We are at the moment finding different ways and strategies to address the LGBT issues to The Africa Union with support of all the support of the African and the International Black LGBT communities.
A campaign of awareness for the Brazilian Resolution 2005(BlackPink&Proud) has been launched to secure passage of this historic resolution. We would like your organization to join us in the campaign of awareness of this resolution by sending letters to your Representative or to the media.
I would be very pleased for your collaboration and for your support. And I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours respectfully
