Are you tired of the Music Industry telling you what you should like? Are you sick of the same old processed pop copies from the bowels of New York, L. A., St. Louis & Chicagos tapped out music scene? Well you aren't alone. The consensus based on the mail crossing my desk at Millennium Music Mission Records (M3) is that mainstream music is stale. Very little has changed in the past 20 years. The music that impacts our lives has not evolved. If you speak on the verbal corruption of lyrics, then I stand corrected. But as for the true art of music creativity, it is mired deep in the mud of industrial manipulation and exploitation.
When I define evolution I think progressive development, improvements with respect to the subject considered, in this case music. Many unfairly place the problem at the feet of the artist. That conclusion is only half of the story. The Industry should shoulder the brunt of the allegation. True, the artist does create the music but industry controls impede the evolutionary process by stifling the fresh ideas of the changing trends and innovative artistry. Their subjectively selected and protected guard artist is seldom challenged in any respect. Good business dictates that if something is not broken don't fix it. So as an example, more 50 cent and Nelly clones are desired by the execs to maximize profits. William Hung was a breath of fresh air even though American Idol viewed his passion as nothing more than joke material. In truth according to the
selection process his act should not have made it to television but ratings demand diversions from the script. Nevertheless, artists have to decide whether they are dedicated to the money or the art because it is hard to maintain artistic expression when others are sculpturing your expression.
The situation is not all lost. The advent of the internet, the only vehicle for independent labels, has been a blessing for independent artist. Now, music you once would not have heard can be found on the web often for free and not from the Industry, but at the expense of such consolidated music groups and independent artist as M3 Records and its "Pro Flow Fa-Sho Show" radio program that gives all genres airplay
worldwide. Independent musicians would not get international exposure without the internet. M3 Records promotes the independent spirit that factors into music's evolution by spinning unexposed records and developing the unheard voice of new world ideas. There is nothing wrong with constructive criticism if it does not smother creative expression. You have to be the judge. Early on, music critics thumbed their nose at Jazz, Rap, the Beatles and many other artists that did not fit the formula like Ray Charles, that's where the consumer weighs in. They embraced new ideas despite the experts view and in time they will discover you if you don't give in.
Hey Michelangelo had to battle the church for his freedom of expression so you will be in good company. So do you stand on the side of the oppressor or as a soldier?
