Time to Teach Child Safety
Sicklerville, NJ- February 7, 2005-- Picture a beautiful summer day. Your child goes outside to play in the front yard. A short time later she is approached by a man who grabs her and tries to pull her into his car. Would she know how to escape and get help? Has she been taught the smart choices to make that could mean the difference between life and death? Do you know what to teach your child to do in such a situation?
The FBI receives more than 2000 reports of missing children every day. That is why Ivette Gonzalez-Stern and Bea Stern, local owner of Safekidshaven.com, urges parents and schools to teach children how to protect themselves from child predators. Since 1983, families and child advocates have observed National Missing Children’s Day in honor of all missing children and their families. The day also serves as an important reminder to parents and teachers to make child protection their top priority.
In support of this day, Ivette Gonzalez-Stern, also known as “safekidshaven.com”, offers the following important child safety tips for parents:
• Approach safety in a non-threatening way so kids don’t become fearful of “bad guys” but are empowered to make smart choices in dangerous situations.
• Make a “Check First” policy with your child. He or she should never go anywhere with anyone (even someone the child knows) without checking with you first.
• Teach your child common lures used by child predators. The most common lures are: pretending to look for a lost dog, offering candy or money, telling the child that they'll hurt family members if they do not comply, and asking for directions. Let your child know that safe adults do not ask children for help nor do they threaten them. If they do encounter any of these situations they should immediately scream, "NO," and run as quickly as they can in the opposite direction and try to find a trusted adult.
• Know where your child is at all times and keep a list of friends’ phone numbers and addresses. Your child should also carry an I.D. card, wear an I.D. bracelet, or have another means of identification with him or her at all times. MomRN.com offers several identification products for children, teenagers, and adults.
• Keep a record of your child's personal and medical information on-hand in case of emergency. Make sure they are fingerprinted and that you have a recent photo available at all times. Safekidshaven.com ID kits keep all the vital information that you need to provide authorities immediately accessible.
