Mind on the Media is proud to announce the winners of this year’s national Turn Beauty Inside Out Poster Contest. This year’s winner show amazing creativity and a lot of spirit.
Congratulations to: Grand Prize winner Willa Sachs, 10 years old, from Chicago, IL. She says, “I Watch, I See, How About Little Respect For Me? Better Movies! Better TV!"
The 2005 “Turn Beauty Inside Out” (TBIO) campaign on how girls and women are portrayed in movies. Mind on the Media sponsored the national poster contest as an opportunity for students ages 8-16 to innovatively respond to the onslaught of negative images in the Hollywood that impact women's and girls' health. With entries nationwide and from Canada and the Phillippines, the decisions were difficult, as each one represented strong messages and creativity.
The Grand Prize winner is being invited to join the Girls Editorial Board from New Moon: the Magazine for Girls and Their Dreams, and other dynamic girls ages 8-16 in Los Angles on April 13-15, 2005, to advocate healthier images in movies at the Girls Leadership Conference. This event is the fifth annual international celebration of media images that promote healthy behavior and attitudes for girls and boys. It will culminate with a roundtable discussion with executives from movie studios, including Disney & WB. One of the keynote speakers is Geena Davis.
TBIO grew out of the 25 Beautiful Girls issue of New Moon Magazine as girls voiced their opinions, needing a definition of beauty that fits them best. Beauty not defined by the shape of their bodies, but by the content of their hearts and minds. Each year New Moon celebrates girls who recognize their inner beauty. New Moon is an award-winning, international, bi-monthly publication edited by and for girls ages 8-14. (www.newmoon.org)
Congratulations and cash prizes were also awarded to:
1st Prize - Anna Robbins-Gidden 11 years old, and Cypress Marrs 12 years old from Olympia, WA.
2nd place - Amelia Butcher 13 years old, from British Columbia, Canada
Available for Interviews: Interviews can be arranged with winners of the poster contest, Nancy Gruver, founder of New Moon and members of the Girls Editorial Board. These girls, ages 8-14, selected the “25 Beautiful Girls” and they also edit every issue of New Moon. Members of the ad community participating in the roundtable are also available for interviews through Caroline Ticarro-Parker, Executive Director of Mind on the Media, at 952.210.1625.
