February 15, 2005 (Press Release) --
NEW YORK, NY- Shortly after the release of new literary magazine, The Complete Meal, released its premier issue, The Complete Meal placed an open call for submissions on their website and in various writer's forums. Among the large number of writers submitting work in hopes of publication was a writer identifying herself as Dina Rockford. Rockford submitted a fiction piece expressing very strong opinions about 9/11, Christianity and President Bush that The Complete Meal opted not to publish.
While it is not common practice among the editorial staff of the Complete Meal to send a rejection letter, Ms. Rockford emailed them on two occasions to check the status of her submission. Hoping to head off any potential problems, Managing Editor Amy Guth wrote a brief email informing Rockford that the publication does not deviate from the theme of each issue and enouraged her to submit as often as she liked while remaining within the subject matter. "Ms. Rockford is a fine writer. The reason we decided not to include her work is quite simple. Each issue of The Complete Meal is done under the umbrella of a theme. At the time, we were reviewing submissions for our third issuse, The Music Issue, and felt that her subject matter wasn't in line with that. Although The Complete Meal does have a strong left slant, we encourage writers to express their opinions openly, regardless of what they might be." said Guth on Monday.
However, upon reading this rejection email, Rockford decided to fight back. She has begun posting angry sentiments and a general call to action on various writer's message boards and even started a weblog devoted to "bringing down the liberal media" with particular venom directed to Guth, going so far as to venture guesses about Guth's political stance, sexual orientation and religion. When prompted to read Rockford's weblog (www.onewomancrusade.blogspot.com), Guth laughed and added, "I only wish my personal life was as colorful as Ms. Rockford claims it is."
When asked if The Complete Meal or Guth planned to seek an order of protection or defamation charges against this angry rejected writer, Guth joked, "I doubt it very much. In fact, I'm fine with allowing her to talk about the publication as much as she likes. Word-of-mouth is rarely a bad thing."
Rockford ignored several emails allowing for comment on this matter. The Complete Meal can be reached via their website, www.thecompletemeal.bravehost.com.
