February 16, 2005 (Press Release) --
Blogging and blogs are a hot topic in business circles now. This Newsletter gives a bird's eye view on them. It is intended for Business Owners and Managers. The word 'blog' is short for 'weblog'. Current estimates suggest considerably more than 5 million blogs are in existence in the USA. They are written by politicians, lawyers, artists and possibly even by your business colleagues and neighbours.
You can see the message is getting around when even a mighty organization like GM has its own blog, Fastlane Blog. This is not something put together by the techies there. Even very senior management such as Bob Lutz, a GM Vice Chairman, are writing in the blog.
Blogging is part of a profound transformation that is occurring in society under the impact of the Internet. The Internet allows any individual to communicate with any other individual in the world. Even Carley Fiorina, then head of Hewlett Packard, opened the Consumer Electronics Show 30 days ago saying " More power to the people says HP". This show in Las Vegas is the largest of its kind in the world. So the world is now a world of individuals who can communicate with each other. What are the implications for businesses? Well they can try to live in that world or they can opt out. So far companies seem to be starting to opt in. They're allowing individuals within their organizations to communicate with the individuals outside the organization and vice versa. It is having mind- blowing effects on even organizations as big as Microsoft, Google and SONY.
The objective of the Company Blog is to maintain an awareness of the company in the minds of customers and potential customers. Like the website, it should be helping to build up the Credibility of the company and give a sense of assurance in dealing with the company. It's part of the transparency that the modern world expects.
Blogging is growing so fast because the blogging software is incredibly user-friendly and very effective. Blogs are easy for the writer and they are also easy for the reader. The beauty of blogs is that the reader is in control of what and when he or she chooses to see. An e-mail newsletter can become part of an intimidating pile of unread mail. The non-intrusive nature of blogging news feeds (news summaries) is a major part of the reason why blogs are so well accepted and why their use is growing rapidly.
The other factor that the 'insiders' know is that the Search Engines, and particularly Google, find blogs most appealing. They are very search-engine visible. Blog entries often have high search engine rankings for the keywords appearing within them. A blog can also include hyperlinks to an associated traditional website. This then helps the ranking of the traditional web pages in the search engines. The blogging phenomenon will not go away. So at some time your company will decide that it's right to start a company blog.
