New York, NY – February 16, 2005: Like many who read the story, Nationally Syndicated Radio Talk Show Host Mike Gallagher was surprised to learn about a La Plata County, Colorado Magistrate’s ruling against two 18-year-old girls for leaving a plate of homemade cookies on a neighbor’s porch. Since the ruling, Lindsey Zellitti and Taylor Ostergaard have been inundated with requests for interviews. According to The Denver Post, besides appearing on “Good Morning America” the girls have declined many interview offers and even passed on a chance to meet football legend John Elway. However, Taylor Ostergaard did find time to appear on The Mike Gallagher Show and this is when Gallagher thought of the idea of sending Girl Scout Cookies to the troops in honor of Ostergaard and her “cookie caper companion” Lindsey Zellitti.
“I always believe there is something positive in every situation and sometimes you just have to look a little closer and think creatively,” stated Mike Gallagher. Calling on his listeners, whom he refers to as “Gallagher’s Army,” Gallagher sounded the bugle and callers quickly responded. Although the woman who sued the girls, Wanita Young, also agreed to an interview heard by Gallagher’s approximate 2.5 million weekly listeners, the response was overwhelmingly in favor of the cookie bakers. Gallagher said, “Although this was a serious event for those involved, we had some fun with the situation and will brighten the day for a lot of troops serving abroad by sending these boxes of Girl Scout Cookies.”
Gallagher said he came up with the idea when a listener emailed him a note about Girl Scouts in the Congaree area of South Carolina sending extra boxes of cookies to the troops. The Congaree Girl Scouts have collaborated with Blue Star Families and Blue Star Mothers of South Carolina to send cookies to deployed American soldiers. According to Gallagher, “what better way to turn a negative into a positive than to send cookies to the troops in honor of these two young ladies attempt to do a good deed? I’m sure the men and women in our military will appreciate receiving the cookies,” Gallagher added. The Blue Star Families organization says Girl Scout Cookies are among the highest requested items by US soldiers.
The Mike Gallagher Show can be heard on over 200 radio stations daily. Gallagher is also a
frequent Guest Host/Contributor on Fox News. Gallagher formed The Mike Gallagher Show
Charitable Foundation (“Gallagher’s Army”) in response to his listener’s support of charitable causes he often mentioned on his radio show. Gallagher’s Army has helped send over 70,000 “gift boxes” to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
