February 27, 2005 (Press Release) --
The baboon is among the largest of the old world monkeys. They are a ground dwelling monkeys that live in troops of as many as 50 in the wild. Our alpha male, Alphie, is a Hamadryas baboon. His females are either Hamadryas, olive, or a mix of the two. Olive baboons are also known as anubis baboons. As baboons go, neither the olive nor the Hamadryas are especially large.
Both olive and Hamadryas baboons are native to northeast Africa. The Hamadryas baboons are considered sacred in Egypt and are thus also known as the sacred baboon.
