MICHAEL WESTBROOK
The Too Famous Interview
How The Westbrook Won
March 1, 2005
In a unanimous decision for the main event, a packed stadium of fans at Cleveland’s CSU Convocation Center were the first to view what is being hailed as "the premiere match-up of the century for ‘CrossOver’ sports." A mixture of Mixed Martial Arts enthusiasts and Football fans were on-hand last Friday, February 25th to witness PAYBACK: King of the Cage Action featuring an all-star fight card and the introduction of NFL Superstars (former Washington Redskins) Michael Westbrook and (New York Giants) Jarrod Bunch. Misty-eyed fans who were unable to attend the event will be able to catch all the action on Pay-Per-View (check your local listings) and on replays throughout the month. After appearing on many shows and interviews (see www.CageKing.com) Michael has shared with us his thoughts, post-fight.
TF: What in your mind defines a true athlete?
MW: "Someone who takes the skills that they’ve learned and combines them with the brains and the heart of a champion. To me that makes a ‘true’ athlete. Anything else is just a person with skills."
TF: We’ve heard that you’ve been trained by Emmanuel Steward, how do you feel about him as a trainer?
MW: "I didn’t get a whole lot of time with him…Of course he’s a Legend. Anything to do with him comes out perfection! If I would do this again he would definitely be someone who would coach me in Boxing. "
TF: Any plans to see Stephen Davis in a cage, and what was that all about anyway?
MW: "If we had hidden cameras in every training camp, nobody would remember Michael Westbrook Vs Stephen Davis. It was just two young guys, one was talking trash, the other wasn’t, one guy kept talking trash …boom, history…that’s the short version."
TF: The fans are hungry for the next heavyweight boxer, Is that you?
MW: "No, definitely not me, I respect all the boxers. I’m a boxing fan really more than I am a football fan, but Boxing is just not something that I can see myself doing…Waiting to exchange punches, not being able to grab my opponent. To me its just not a fair fight. One day, someone will come along with longer arms faster jabs, so, there…"
TF: Who in your mind would be a worthy opponent, should people start the fantasy fight in their minds?
MW: "I’d fight any heavyweight. I wouldn’t want to fight Lennox Lewis, no, I take that back, I think people would want to see me fight Lennox Lewis. I’d fight anybody. I’m not that skilled of a boxer. I think people would want to see a pure athlete fighting Boxing."
