March 9, 2005 (Press Release) --
ART FOR ART'S SAKE is a Chester Community Arts Group who will be holding their FIRST EVER art exhibition titled ‘GIVE CHESTER ART A CHANCE!' at the historic BISHOP LLOYD'S PALACE, in conjunction with CHESTER CIVIC TRUST’S 45TH BIRTHDAY from the 19th March - 22nd March 2005.
The art show will house a diverse range of artists from traditional to contemporary with the request of producing art with the theme of Chester. All the artists are locally based around Chester, professional and amateur. Over twelve artists are included the show without bias; Mike Williams (well known cartoonist, David Heke (Official photographer of the amphitheatre project), Jill Pears, Jo Waller, Robert Eagle, Diane Burrows etc...
18 months ago the co-founders of the group Stephen Langtree (Vice President of the Civic Trust) and Spencer John Derry (Semi-Professional Artist) started a press campaign in the local papers to bring to light the lack of art venues in Chester. An open group of supporters have maintained contact with one another in regular meetings to help establish an arts centre for the City of Chester.
'Give Chester Art a Chance!' will hopefully bring like-minded people together, to help and support the cause of our art group. In the long run we hope to achieve a place for the community to display their art, to house travelling, local, national and international exhibitions and provide workshops for artists. It all seems grandiose but if other towns and cities can provide this why can't we?
Public open times are; Saturday 19th March 10.00am - 4.00pm, Sunday 20th March 11.00am - 4.00pm, Monday 21st March 10.00am - 4.00pm and Tuesday March 22nd 10.00am - 2.00pm. Admission is free.
WHO ARE WE?
•Art for Art’s Sake is the working title for a community-based arts group that is committed to establishing a public/community visual arts centre for Chester.
•The group was set up in early 2004 as the result of a public meeting organised by the Chester Civic Trust.
OBJECTIVES
•Our aim is to provide Chester with a centre for visual and creative arts on a par with many similar towns and cities.
•The centre will incorporate gallery space for local artists as well as for other exhibitors from Britain and overseas. Workshop space and cafeteria facilities will also be included if practicable.
•Our purpose is to create an environment for the public, tourists, schools, colleges and universities to explore the diverse range of talent the visual arts has to offer. We will bridge the artistic diversions and disciplines without bias i.e. sculpture, pottery, the arts & crafts, printmaking, installation, contemporary and traditional painting.
•Funding will be sought from the local community and surrounding businesses.
•Our mission is to put Chester on the map for the arts to coincide with Liverpool’s ‘Capital of Culture’ in 2008.
