March 15, 2005 (Press Release) --
This May 6 & 7, InterPlay director Katherine Burke will host “Facilitating Group Dialogue With Interactive and Applied Theatre,” a training for school counselors, youth workers, educators, community workers, and therapists. The workshop, held at the Tippecanoe Arts Federation in Lafayette, Indiana, will focus on theatre games, dialogue exercises, and interactive performance to raise awareness about and find solutions for challenging issues such as sexual assault, substance use, and peer pressure.
“Interactive and applied theatre techniques are used around the world to examine challenging issues and find solutions to complex problems,” says Burke. “But you don’t have to look across the globe to see social injustices. All you have to do is visit a high school to witness peer pressure, bullying, discrimination, sexual harassment, or substance use. Anyone can learn to use interactive theatre to address any social injustice, large or small.”
Burke has used interactive and applied theatre with a wide variety of groups, locally, nationally, and internationally. Clients and collaborators include the Indiana Youth Institute, Purdue University, World Learning, the Indiana Civil Rights Commission, the Indianapolis Urban League, Butler University, the National Association for College Admissions Counseling, Communities Against Rape Initiative, and many more.
Traditional educational methods - lectures, brochures, and videos - fall short, says Burke. “They encourage the audience to be passive. You never know if the people who you want to reach are truly listening and learning, or if the information is going in one ear and out the other. But by involving people in interactive theatre activities, you can guarantee that people are engaged in an active, hands-on way.”
The two-day workshop will take place from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at the Tippecanoe Arts Federation, 638 North Street, in Lafayette. Registration is $200. Limited to 20 participants. Indiana Professional Standards Board CRU’s applied for. More information can be found at www.interplaytheatre.com.
