DHS Ignores Assistance Request in Screening National I/T Internship Applicants

Thursday, March 17, 2005 – Chicago, IL – Web Presence announced today its requests to Homeland Security for assistance in screening Middle-Eastern applicants of its national internship program were ignored.
Web Presence is a national web design firm that offers telecommuting Internet-technology internships across the nation. The company says its internships allowed individuals to learn about and access small business information networks that, if in the wrong hands, could be used to “shut down” certain aspects of the nation’s small business market sector.
Jim Ray, a spokesman for Web Presence, said the company made repeated written requests to Homeland Security officials asking for assistance in screening what the company considers “red flag” applicants based on interview reference criteria.
Ray said at one point, a majority of the company’s internship applicants were of Middle-Eastern descent, attending U.S. colleges on a J-1 or F-1 Visa status and did not have American citizenship.
“Given the nature of our program, this is a very serious issue,” said Ray. “We went to DHS with specific information on a number of applicants. This is totally unacceptable.”
