Colorado Springs-March 17
Colorado activists will gather, along with 583 towns, to protest the war in Iraq, on the second anniversary, in Colorado Springs on Saturday, March 19 at 12 pm, noon.
The protest is sponsored by the Springs Action Alliance, along with a broad, state wide coalition of groups working against war and for civil rights. The legality of protesting from an interstate overpass in Colorado was decided by the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver in 2001.
The demonstrators will gather on all 5 Interstate 25 overpasses in Colorado Springs at 12:00 PM, Saturday, March 19, for 3 hours.
Participant, Mark Lewis, of the Springs Action Alliance, and producer of a daily alternative news digest, said, "With 1,567 US dead, 24,772 wounded, 100,000 Iraqis killed, $300 Billion in costs to US taxpayers, and no weapons of mass destruction found, this war has never met any criteria needed for war in the history of America, including the criteria stated by this administration."
"This war has only benefited Halliburton and the other defense contractors, has helped cause the largest deficit in American history, and destroyed the foreign policy credibility of the US world wide."
"All the excuses for this war have been proven false, from weapons of mass destruction and Uranium purchases in Africa, to ties between Saddam and Osama", Mr. Lewis said.
"The congress violated the constitution by not declaring war again, and then has ignored every disaster from violations of the Geneva Convention with the Abu Ghraib torture, to the black hole of funding paid for with an astronomic level of deficit spending."
"95% of the US wounded became casualties after Bush declared 'Mission Accomplished' and an 'end to major combat operations' on May 1, 2003." "This entire war was planned by Bush before he ever took office, according to many people."
"The Iraqi children born with congenital deformities from Depleted Uranium pollution, has risen 400% since the 1991 war salted the entire country with our weapons of mass destruction", Lewis said. "Osama is no where to be found, no weapons of mass destruction have been found, no true coalition of the willing has been found, and no truth in reporting has been found."
"The cost of this war in just Colorado, in addition to the 43 from Fort Carson that have died, is $2.3 Billion dollars; which could have sent 315,000 children to a year of Head Start, or insured 1.4 million children, or hired 41,302 more school teachers."
The protest will be peaceful and legal, as decided by the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver in 2001. Copies of this decision will be on hand at all 5 overpasses. The organizers encourage all in attendance to be absolutely sure of not accidentally dropping anything from the overpass and remind all to be peaceful in words and actions.
