March 30, 2005 (Press Release) --
The Federation of Galaxy Explorers is a 501(c)3 non-profit educational organization built on the paradigm of a members participatory club. Galaxy Explorers are organized into local “Mission Teams”. These teams meet on a monthly basis, 10 meetings per year. Field trips are also conducted. Adult volunteers teach Galaxy Explorers with easy to understand and fun-to-do educational material to provide a hands-on understanding of space science, Earth science, engineering, and rocketry. Another primary theme - Space Citizenship - teaches the role of government, the power of citizens in a democracy, the promise of space expressed in art, writing, history, and business. Mission Team members wear uniform shirts and are rewarded for participation and achievements with ribbons, patches, medals, and certificates. Awards are an integral part of the program providing children self-esteem through achievement and recognition.
The “Galaxy Ball” will last from 7 p.m. until midnight, and will include dancing, an awards ceremony and a silent auction. The 2005 Space Leadership Award will be presented to former Pennsylvania Congressman Robert S. Walker for his service as Chairman of the Commission on the Future of the United States Aerospace Industry, as a member of the Presidential Commission on the Implementation of the United States Space Exploration Policy. Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, noted astrophysicist and The Frederick P. Rose Director, Hayden Planetarium, New York City will receive the Space Education Inspiration Award for his role in educating and inspiring the general public.
In 2002, Galaxy Explorers pilot programs began at 13 schools in Colorado, Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Virginia, where we conducted a summer space camp for 150 children. In less than three years we hosted over 2500 children in 13 summer camps, after school, and evening programs and expanded to PA, CA, MO, and NV. The Federation of Galaxy Explorers expects to have a program of several thousand children in the coming years. To accomplish this nationwide expansion, Galaxy Explorers has established partnerships with government agencies, businesses, and non-profit organizations. In addition, the effort is strongly supported by Congressional Members and staff.
