March 30, 2005 (Press Release) --
March 30, 2005 - Burnsville, MN USA
Three years ago if you'd asked someone in the southern Twin Cities if they read the Coffee News, they'd probably tell you they had no clue what you're talking about.
Ask the question today however and they'd more likely tell you, of course, they read it every week at their favorite restaurant or coffee
shop.
On April 1,2002, Kevin Stirtz brought Coffee News (the largest franchised publication in the world) to the Twin Cities. Now, three years later, thousands of people in the southern Twin Cities read Coffee News for their weekly dose of humor, trivia, local events and good clean fun.
Stirtz started the business with the help of his wife, Debbie. Soon though he found a need for additional help. The business now has nine
people involved in various aspects of the business.
Award Winner
The first year in business, Stirtz was named a Top 10 Franchise by Bill Buckley, the president of Coffee News USA. Since then he's expanded his role beyond that of a typical franchise owner.
Trainer and Mentor
Since 2003, Stirtz has been a mentor for new franchise owners to help them through their first few months of startup. Last year he was asked
to join the Coffee News USA national training team. In that role he teaches at the international Coffee News Conferences held several times throughout the year.
"The teaching and mentoring has been great. There's nothing better than when someone tells you how much you've helped them overcome a
challenge or a struggle. It's been very gratifying" Stirtz said.
Growth in the Twin Cities
Since starting the business in his hometown of Burnsville, Stirtz has overseen growth of the publication to 10 cities in the southern metro
area with about 52,000 readers every week. He has also recruited other franchise owners so there are now three Coffee News publishers in the
Twin Cities.
World Wide Growth
While Coffee News has grown in the Twin Cities it has also grown significantly worldwide. In 2002 there were 340 franchises in 28 countries. As of late 2004 there were 595 franchises in 44 countries.
High Rankings from Entrepreneur Magazine
For several years Coffee News has been listed as one of the most popular low-cost franchises in the USA by Entrepreneur Magazine.
This year however, they have been named the number one franchise in their business category (advertising services).
Other rankings in Entrepreneur Magazine include the Franchise 500 (#236), the Fastest-Growing Franchises (#55), the Top Low-Cost
Franchises (#65) and America's Top Global Franchises (#94).
Future
Working with Coffee News USA, Stirtz plans to grow the Coffee News brand in Minnesota. Currently Maine and Texas have the most franchises
but Stirtz would like to see Minnesota up there with them.
"Minnesota is a hot-bed of entrepreneurial activity. There's no reason we can't be one of the largest Coffee News markets in the country," he
said.
