April 8, 2005 (Press Release) --
The Wal-Mart Foundation has launched a new promotional "game" that can be played at Wal-Mart stores across the country. It's called Wal-Mart Bingo, and bingo sheets can be downloaded from the Wal-Mart Foundation's website at http://www.walmart-foundation.org/, and will be distributed at stores in various test markets starting in May 2005.
The game consists of having a "Bingo" card filled with the names of countries of the world. Customers are encouraged to go through their local Wal-Mart store and find the country of origin for the products in the store. Completed "Bingo" cards are good for discounts at Wal-Mart stores across the country.
"This provides an opportunity for children to learn about where the products their family buys are made," said Daniel Peterson, Chief Education Officer at Wal-Mart Foundation, Inc. "We acknowledge that many people feel that a lot of people are put off by things that are not made in the United States. But we feel that by introducing educational programs such as this, we are able to emphasize the positive aspects of free trade to a new generation of youth in America."
"We believe that it's time that Wal-Mart use its position as industry leader to help give back to communities, and educational tools such as this are one way that we can do this while still protecting the interest of our stockholders. We want to establish, through this and other programs, Wal-Mart as a community resource. It's not hard to imagine a future where children will go to after-school programs at Wal-Mart stores, where they can continue their learning and purchasing in a safe environment."
