April 9, 2005 (Press Release) --
The food pantry and ministry center at Indian Creek Baptist Church in Stone Mountain, Ga., will be able to purchase more food for the needy, thanks to a monetary gift from the Bless God America ministry.
The $100 gift, presented by Rev. K. Ross Newland on March 31, is designed to be the first of a series of support gifts to the food pantry.
"Indian Creek's food pantry does valuable work in a community that needs it," says Newland, director of the organization, "and we're glad to be able to support it. We hope to do a lot more."
The food pantry and ministry center at the church has been in operation for several years and helps out as many as 30 to 40 people a week, says the church's pastor, Bill Owen of Conyers, Ga. The pantry, which is open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., distributes nonperishable food items and clothing to needy community members on a walk-in basis. Donations such as the Bless God America gift are used to purchase those food items, Owen says, to supplement the items the ministry center receives from church members and others.
"We get plenty of clothes in through donations, but we never get enough food, so we end up buying a lot of food," Owen says.
Bless God America is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that was founded in Michigan in September 2003. The organization, which has a theme of "turning the hearts of Americans from asking to giving," was formed in response to the prevalent "God Bless America" signs after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
"As much as God has blessed this nation," Newland says, "America has not always returned the favor. The focus of Christians needs to change from 'us' to 'Him.' "
The organization moved its base of operations from Michigan to Metro Atlanta in September 2004 and still supports a youth center in northeast Michigan, in addition to the Indian Creek food pantry and other efforts such as the drive to find a permanent home for the mammoth "Life of Christ" painting by DeKalb County, Ga., artist Jackson Bailey.
Bless God America hosted a fundraising event at the Wal-Mart in Stone Mountain on April 9 and 10 and plans another event there on June 25 and 26. For monetary donations, the organization offers premium gifts of T-shirt and lapel pins bearing its cross-and-pin logo. The lapel pins are also carried at The Cross and The Crown Christian Bookstore in Conyers.
"Bless God America is growing into a ministry designed to support organization startup and maintenance," Newland says.
