Armed with knowledge of plastics, fiber optics, and electronics, Mr. Simon constructed his first Defiant Digit. The Defiant Digit is a clear, six inch light up automobile display in the shape of a hand extending its middle finger. It plugs into the cigarette lighter outlet, where an easy to find pushbutton switch is located on the cigarette lighter plug. The display is suction cupped to the rear window of the car, truck, minivan, etc. Installation only takes a couple minutes. Nearly invisible when it’s off, it can’t be seen; once lit up, The Defiant Digit can be clearly seen for about 100 to 150 feet.
“The prototype was rather crude”, says Mr. Simon, “But the results were better than I had anticipated”.
The Defiant Digit was on the road, alerting tailgaters to their inappropriate driving habits.
“It was amazing”, says Mr. Simon, “If there was somebody riding my bumper, with or without their high beams on, a couple quick pushes on the switch, illuminating the Defiant Digit, had an immediate reaction on the part of the tailgater. They instantly backed off and put their low beams on.”
Mr. Simon adds, “Funny thing, though, I noticed in my rear view mirror, that they were all laughing.”
What kept happening on a regular basis was that the tailgaters would drive next to Mr. Simon and give the thumbs up, with huge smiles on their faces, or better yet, motion to him to ask where they could get one.
“I went to work to make the Defiant Digit an easy to install device without tools.” Simon says, “And I always would have a few with me due to the numerous requests to buy them”.
Three versions of the Defiant Digit are available, with the difference being the length of the power cord. “I want everyone to be able to use it, with different length (power) cords to accommodate every size and length vehicle, from subcompact cars to full size vans and limousines.”
Retail pricing for the Defiant Digit starts at $19.95 for the 15 foot version. 20 foot and 25 foot versions are available as well.
What’s next for Mr. Simon? “I am going to have available a version for 18 wheelers that mounts to their side view mirrors, why should us four wheelers have all the fun?”
With the internet in full force as a perfect marketing medium for the Defiant Digit, he is up and running with a website that not only shows the product, but some very humorous video clips and information about The Digitus impudicus ("impudent finger")
Amazingly enough, The Defiant Digit, it’s not illegal. Several state superior courts have ruled that since the gesture is not sexually explicit and that it does not express “fighting words” or “incite violence” that it is protected under the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights for freedom of speech, freedom of expression.
