April 20, 2005 (Press Release) --
Miami, FL — (April 25, 2005) MTI Home Video, the leading independent home entertainment company, has signed a new Studio Partner, SAIKO FILMS, it was announced today by Larry Brahms, President, MTI Home Video. SAIKO (pronounced psycho), a Japanese slang word meaning “the best,” “the coolest,” or “awesome,” will focus on cutting edge Asian produced horror, action, and suspense films.
“The idea for the Saiko Films line came from Bedford Entertainment’s Steve Mackler,” said Brahms. “We experimented with Another Heaven [February 2003], which proved to be successful, so we began looking for additional films that would have the same mass appeal. With the phenomenal success of Anime, Japanese live-action features and studio remakes, we wanted to establish a new label that would capture this market, as well as those older fans that are looking for foreign horror, action, and suspense. Through Saiko Films, we are looking to release one picture a quarter in 2005, with our first, Kibakichi, proving to be our most industrious DVD release to-date.”
KIBAKICHI, a Japanese action/fantasy horror film by special effects expert and director Tomo-o Haraguchi. Filmed in the vein of Shigeru Mizuki's ”Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro,” KIBAKICHI lives up to the SAIKO FILMS mission, giving viewers a new take on the traditional, while offering exceptional swordplay, over-the-top action sequences, fun special effects, and a great story. The film was produced by Seiichi Ono & Junichiro Mizuno, with the screenplay by Kamio Mugi.
The film stars Ryuji Harada, Miki Tanaka, Mubu Nakayama, and Masato Ibu, and is about a lone swordsman from Yokai, a land of monsters that once co-existed alongside man. Raised on raw meat rations and with an affinity with the full moon as well as a blistering skill with the sword his Yokai persona is that of a werewolf. In his venture to seek out the best in mankind, he finds himself in a desolate village and in the middle of an age-old battle between good and evil. Geisha turn into giant carnivorous spiders, samurai change into werewolves and ghostly monsters and skeletons prey on humans, KIBAKICHI delivers all the grit of a spaghetti western with the violent grace of a samurai flick.
The film will be released in the U.S. on DVD only with a MSRP of $24.95. DVD features will include both an English dubbed version and the original Japanese language version, along with optional English and Spanish subtitles. The feature will be shown in widescreen format, with Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound, behind-the-scenes clips, interactive menus, scene selection, and trailers.
