Play With Me
***
Formerly known as Mr. King, now Kings Road, this L. A. based quintets debut cd is a mix of gentle emotions and staying true to your passion, fused together through tightly woven musicianship, introspective lyrics, and the uplifting soulful voice of lead singer Ivan King.
And through it all I wont drop the ball, I just smile/at the cameras and watch them crawl/Cause on channel 7 the fat lady sings and/channel 9 a boy just flies with wings, King sings in the opening track, Play With Me, challenging the business side of music, or art as the case may be, affirming his humanity in an otherwise mechanical milieu.
The plaintive piano playing of Damian Heredia at the beginning of Western Skies sets the mood for Kings haunting vocals capturing the essence of living in the moment, ...dont let today slip away, you may not be here again... he chides, while lead guitarist Peter Houston compliments with fleeting riffs that are as intelligible as melancholic sobs.
Todd Shiromas Rain is an exercise in musical meditation and contemplation, taking you from gentle sacred depths with his delicate high tone note picking to Houstons subtle distortion like a distant sound of thunder, to the zenith of Fred Caguiats intense drumming and crashing cymbals...then cradling you down as the Rain calmly dissipates...
The synergy of Heredias classical jazz training and Kings gospel roots are felt deeper in Changes. Penned by both King and Heredia, Changes is the quintessential Rock and Soul anthem in the album that surges through, rising up and subsiding in a fitting quintet climax with all five members fusing into a collective energy...You mean the world to me, sorry why cant you believe/There aint no way that I am gonna change...
Overall, Play With Me is an open invitation to share in the struggles and exultations of pursuing your passion, of staying committed, of staying bold...and the follow up album is already in the works! The band will be recording their new material during the summer (05) in an all wooden house to try capture those magical acoustics...but just as I was reminded, while listening to Kings Roads Play With Me, of one of Goethes couplets:
Whatever you can do, or dream you can,
begin it. Boldness has genius, power,
and magic in it.
