May 1, 2005 (Press Release) --
This summer on June 29th fans of alien invasions will be clamoring to theatres to watch Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of H.G. Wells’s classic tale, The War of the Worlds. In the mean time, science fiction junkies can now add another edition of the book to their collection published by Winnipeg-based firm Coscom Entertainment. With all the editions of Well’s story out there, why should they order this new book from bookstores or their favorite online retailer? The answer is two: stunning artwork by artist Sean Simmans and an intelligent introduction by Halloween IV author Nicholas Grabowsky.
“Classic books have been in print since they day they were published,” says Coscom Entertainment Publisher A.P. Fuchs. “I realize there are hundreds, if not more, editions of this book currently available. I’ll be the first to admit that, but the reason why my company took on this project was because we wanted to—by putting out a quality product—pay tribute to H.G. Wells’s vision about invaders from another world. Wells was the father of Science Fiction and every author, artist, filmmaker and fan of the genre owe him for the hundreds of thousands of hours of entertainment the Sci-fi genre has brought us over the past hundred-and-some-odd years. The goal with this first classic book from Coscom Entertainment, and for all others—like another H.G. Wells’s book coming out this year, The Invisible Man, and Bram Stoker’s Dracula—is we wanted to give fans more than just a story. By adding pulp-looking artwork and an introduction by a recognized name in the literary field, we wanted to give the reader more than just a narrative slapped between two covers. I’m sure Wells, if he was alive today, would agree that it’s about providing an experience. We’re trying to add to that experience by offering visuals and the thoughts and opinions from someone whose name carries weight in this industry.”
It is no secret that films get fans to the bookstores. Just look at Harry Potter and A Series of Unfortunate Events or the forthcoming Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Book sales for these titles shot up since the movies’ releases or since knowing they would be coming to a theatre near you.
“I’m thankful Mr. Spielberg decided to direct War of the Worlds. Now, hopefully, people will be interested in checking out the source of this amazing tale: the novel published over one-hundred years ago by H.G. Wells. In a world where the amount of people who read is on the decline and where television and video games dominate, I’m proud to participate in something that’ll encourage people to take a chance on the written word again and, hopefully, inspire them to continue doing so.”
The War of the Worlds, ISBN 0-9737282-1-3, was released April 29 and is available through all major US bookstores and online retailers like Amazon.com and Projectpulp.com and direct from Coscom Entertainment at www.CoscomEntertainment.com
