May 4, 2005 (Press Release) -- Chicago is the third largest city in the United States, after New York City and Los Angeles, with an official population of 2,896,016, as of the 2000 US Census. It is the fourth largest city in North America and the seventh largest in the Western Hemisphere. The city itself covers 228 square miles but when combined with its suburbs the metropolitan area, known as Chicagoland, encompasses eight counties and more than 5,000 square miles with a population nearing 10 million. The city is the county seat of Cook County. Recent (2003) population estimates put the number for the city proper at 2,869,121, while suburban populations continue to grow, with estimates at 9,650,137 for the combined city and suburbs.
