May 9, 2005 (Press Release) --
Earlier this week, Atomic Forums (sister site to the computer magazine “Atomic”) released their awaited version 2.5 update, greeted by mixed results. The update includes a premium membership option that must be purchased to access sections of the forum, including the General Chat forum, known as “The Greenroom”. Some members were more than happy to pay for the forum where they spent so much of their time. Many others were outraged by the move.
Some Atomic fans claim that the restricted access to the General Chat forum is to reduce the amount of unproductive posts, others say it was to increase revenue. Many of the members against the paid subscriptions were quick to abandon their accounts completely, searching for a free alternative. The highly controversial “Otamic Forums” (oh-tah-mick) quickly surfaced to provide not only ex-members of Atomic with a place to go, but to help continue communication between Atomic members and those who left.
“The aim of Otamic isn’t to take over Atomic, its to continue the friendships we had at Atomic. Some of our members are still active over at Atomic, and we are fine with that. We are catering for everyone, not just those who left (Atomic)” explained one of the administrators at Otamic. “We have had great support from the community, with everyone embracing the changeover and kickstarting Otamic with over 800 posts in the first 24 hours”.
Otamic was forced to move from a free forum account with proboards to a vbulletin powered board on a new server by the end of day two, when it became evident that the bandwidth given wasn’t even going to last a week. Otamic quickly relocated to Otamic.com where they had to start again from scratch.
“Its not a major problem (losing the proboards threads), we love our new system and with the support we have from our members, we should be thriving again in no time”.
