May 11, 2005 (Press Release) --
New York, May 11, 2005 – “Was it all a scheme?” That is the question that every conscious American citizen should be asking Hip-Hop mogul Sean “P-Diddy” Combs, in regards to his 2004 “Citizen Change” campaign, which surrounded what many have perceived to be the most important Presidential election of our time.
As a shameless self-promoter, “P-Diddy” used every possible media vehicle at his disposal to create the façade of a supposed newly found political awareness, which contrasts his former public persona as a “Bad-Boy”(i.e. remember the December 1999 “holiday shooting incident” at Club NY).
Endorsed by influential celebrity friends and a team of loyalist followers, the shiny suit wearing Combs, created both a non-profit organization as well as a fashion movement, to support his vain attempt at urging the nation’s impressionable young adults to “Vote or Die!” Ironically enough however, is the fact that some of “Diddy’s” own “Vote or Die” campaigners appear to be hypocritical, as they themselves forfeited their right to vote in the 2004 election, with some having been found guilty of previous felony charges (i.e. “Rapper 50 Cent”).
Additionally, much like its creator, the “Citizen Change” non-profit, non-partisan organization is a veritable oxymoron, as it is impossible to simultaneously take a position of indifference (i.e. non-partisanship) and advocate “Change!” Thus, as unfortunate as it may sound, the ugly truth of the matter is that there is more to American politics than voting. Therefore, we have created the “Changed Citizen” organization and have launched our “Didn’t Vote Didn’t Die” campaign as the antithesis of “Diddy’s” political high jinx.
In the words of President John F. Kennedy, we feel that it is time to “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.”
As conscious citizens, we understand the importance of voting and respect the various sacrifices made by our ancestors to ensure this right. However, we also recognize the complex nature of economics and politics, which often supercede the act of merely casting a ballot. Thus we have created a vehicle that provides all citizens an alternative means to be politically proactive.
Rather than wait for an election year or politicians to address issues pertinent to the average citizen, we the people of Changed Citizen.com have decided to take matters into our own hands, as our organization will dedicate a portion of the merchandizing proceeds from the “Didn’t Vote Didn’t Die” campaign to assist in the fight against homelessness, unemployment and reducing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.
Wearers of the “Didn’t Vote Didn’t Die!” t-shirt will not only be making a sensible fashion statement, but they will prove that contrary to the belief of those such as “Diddy,” that the act of “voting” is “not” the only means for citizens to be politically active in a “respectable” manner, nor is “voting” the sole means for the peoples’ voice to be heard by politicians and government officials.
