May 13, 2005 (Press Release) --
NEW YORK, NY (May 6, 2005) Manna House Workshops, East Harlem’s thirty-eight year old 501(3)(c) cultural center presents its closing concert of MEEE (Music for Entertainment, Education and Enlightenment) with Jazz organist Nathan Lucas and his Trio. The annual series features seasoned and emerging Jazz artists every first Sunday from February through June at 4:00 p.m. in the Manna Mini Theatre at 338 East 106th Street (between 1st and 2nd Avenues) in East Harlem.
On Sunday, June 5th at 4:00pm Nathan will have as a special guest his amazing nonagenarian dad Max “the sax” Lucas who will seduce you with his sensual horn. Nathan started his musical journey at the age of 6 at Manna House Workshops where he studied guitar with the late legendary Skeeter Best. He takes the stage at the Manna Mini Theatre as an accomplished world traveled artist.
His dad who played with Jazz legends such as Louis Armstrong, Buddy Johnson, Thelonius Monk, Charlie Parker and Tiny Bradshaw introduced him to the world of Jazz. However, Nathan did not become serious about Jazz until he saw a Jazz organist swinging the Hammond B3 at the now defunct world-famous Harlem nightclub La Famille.
Over the years, Nathan befriended some of the world’s greatest musicians and learned a variety of tricks on the Hammond organ. Jimmy McGriff, John Patton, Charles Earland, Gloria Coleman, Rhoda Scott, George Benson, Danny Mixon and Seleno Clark helped to take his sound to the next level. He attributes the success of his swinging style to his early childhood classical training and his father’s experience of 75 years.
Nathan has worked with Roy Ayers, Gerald Hayes, Melba Joyce and is currently working with celebrity guitarist Ronny Jordan and has a weekly engagement at the Lenox Lounge in Harlem. At this event, he will be joined by Eric Johnson on guitar and Matt Baranello on drums.
This annual series is designed to present professional artists in an intimate setting at a low cost for persons who may not be able to afford the prices of admission at a more commercial venue. An added value to this event is the delicious “Family Cocktails” which completes MEEE’s mission to stimulate the mind, body and spirit.
Seating is limited and reservations are recommended. Please call (212) 722-8223 for reservations, tickets, special family and group rates information. Suggested donations: $15 at the door, $10 in advance and $7 for seniors and students with ID.
MHW is a not-for-profit performing arts center in East Harlem. Proceeds from ticket sales provide scholarship assistance to students from economically disadvantaged communities of New York City and the surrounding boroughs.
