In Chinese folk medicine, kudzu root was given for drunkenness. This has been the subject of modern kudzu research.
Researchers at Harvard Medical School injected 71 golden Syrian hamsters, who by nature have an unusual craving for alcohol, with daidzin, kudzu's active ingredient. The hamsters immediately cut back on their alcohol consumption and began to drink more water. These preliminary findings add an interesting sidebar to kudzu's already recognized herbal traditions.
Southern Illinois University Carbondale and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, researched kudzu root on rats. Tests proved, that rats, that were prone to alcohol were drinking it less after injecting with kudzu than before. After injecting kudzu, rats, that had a significant amount of alcohol in their bloodstream, experienced improved motor functions and equilibrum.
Judging on the results of these tests, one could say that kudzu could be used as a natural remedy for hangover.
These tests are very promising for people, who are trying to combat alcoholism.
