May 27, 2005 (Press Release) --
Grand Performances’ 19th annual concert season’s stellar line-up kicks off on Friday, June 24 and keeps rockin’ and rollin’ all the way into the 2nd Annual Grand Avenue Festival on Saturday, October 8.
This summer’s series includes two Special Programs - Film Series and Electronic Explorations - which will become signature events as the organization heads towards its 20th anniversary in 2006.
The Film Series features five films: among them are the classic film noir Double Indemnity, 2005’s Oscar nominated French selection, Les Choristes, and Paramount Classics’ critically acclaimed Mad Hot Ballroom. Electronic Explorations presents a diverse array of artists who use electronics as a means of enhancing their music. TGU (TransGlobal Underground) and MidiVal Punditz - both are on the lineup for the World Music Electronica Festival as well as SuperNova and Seksu Roba, will delve into ambient, trip-hop and mind-bending sounds that will push the boundaries of the electronic world.
The big bang music month of July includes L.A.’s premiere Afro-Latin-Funk and beyond band Ozomatli, the King of Raï himself Khaled with Don Was, K.C. Porter and Was Not Was. Grammy Award winning performers - jazz composer and trumpeter Terence Blanchard and South Africa’s hyper-kinetic, mesmerizing dance and a capella group Ladysmith Black Mambazo as well as the swirling electronica, adrenalized drum ‘n’ bass sounds of the World Music Electronica Festival featuring TGU, MidiVal Punditz and Issa Bagayogo.
August opens with L.A.- based ambient/synth ace George Sarah with ex-Bauhaus/Love & Rockets bassist David J and Jason O’Bryan of The Dub. Henry Mancini Institute Latin Jazz Big Band with special guest Ray Barretto and three master congueros Francisco Aguabella, Carlos “Patato” Valdez and Milton Cardonas A.K.A.(the Conga Masters).
Grand Performances’ commitment to dance, theater and traditional arts continues this season with two extraordinary companies from disparate lands. Mexico-city based dance and movement group Onirico and Tapei-based Hsiao His Yuan puppet Theater Company. Both are magnificent examples of the artistry and imagination that exists beyond our shores and oftentimes is rarely witnessed by American audiences.
The audience involvement series, Music, Movement, Meaning continues as well as the Zócalo events with artists such as daKah Hip Hop Orchestra’s front man Geoff “GG” Gallegos and jazz composer and bassist John Clayton. The Sunday programming for young children and their families also continues with Parachute Express and the bi-lingual songs of Suni Paz and Colibri.
