This heavenly hiking is located at 2,000 meters above sea level where the mountain wilderness is splashed with azure lakes, cloaked with alpine meadows and backed by mighty majestic jagged peaks, describe the Cassies. More than the rewarding vista though is the entertainment along the hike – molting mountain goats, California bighorn sheep and large hoary marmots.

Nor is the hike just for adventure-type hikers. Novice trekkers can partake given the convenience of Cathedral Lakes Lodge as your base camp. " Thick stands of spruce, fir and larch enshroud the glistening gem, and snow-tipped peaks provide a breathtaking backdrop," describes Jane.

"Varied accommodations that sprawl the shoreline include cozy log hewn cottages, a modern day Mongolian yurt for the meditation-minded, a horde of well groomed campsites and the grand focal point, a Bavarian-style lodge that hosts half a dozen guest rooms. Here, a soothing hot tub waits to offer therapeutic reprieve for strained and mountain-worn muscles, a fireside lounge entices game lovers and bookworms, and three times a day the clanging dining gong stimulates some serious salivation."

Even the heartiest alpine appetite will be satisfied by head chef Surya Misra and pastry chef Karin Leja, who put on some fantastic buffets – including succulent lamb, beef tenderloin and lemon-garnished salmon - for hungry hikers.

Cathedral Lakes Lodge operates from early June to mid-October, with three distinct seasons for visitors to savor – snow-dusted trails and new buds in the early season, a blaze of wildflowers in alpine meadows in mid-season, and golden autumn hues in late season.

" When it came time to leave, we too lingered on our treasured memories collected during our two-day stay, and agreed that as well as feeling on top of the world, Cathedral Provincial Park was probably the closest place to heaven on earth," conclude the Cassies.
