May 31, 2005 (Press Release) --
According to statistics released by the American Publishing Association, over 50% of the 175,000 books published annually now go to print without editor review, advice or corrections! This is because the print on demand (POD) self publisher model used by many new company entrants to the book publishing industry today are producing the majority of titles on the market by printing up the rejected slush piles of quality publishers.
They choose not to use traditional book development/content editors to ensure the quality of their books before going to print in order to increase profits by cutting out quality traditional book production expenses. The result is that the majority of books published today are poorly written and contain many errors, thus undermining our educational system and harming our overall reputation for American quality in literature and scholarship.
In an effort to fight industry trends in devaluing the use of and important contribution of professional editors, American Book Publishing has begun a recognition program to publicly honor professional book editors.
The 2005 Editor of the Year American Book Publishing ( http://www.american-book.com ) company recipient, Harlow Keith, has been with the company since 2001 and has worked on a total of fourteen books, primarily in the historical fiction genre, nine of which have been published to date. Keith was honored with a plaque and a bonus check in recognition of his superb editing abilities and professionalism.
Before becoming an editor, Keith worked for over twenty years in the Human Resource Departments of several national companies, finally culminating in the Director of Resources for a national retail chain. He later became a private consultant and author. Keith holds an MA in Public Administration and a Masters Degree in Labor and Human Resources. His first book, Cold Harbor, was nominated for the 2003 Michael Shaara Award for Excellence in the Civil War Fiction category. Keith accepted the position with American Book Publishing shortly after Cold Harbors release in 2001 and was quickly promoted to Senior Editor in 2002.
The majority of American Book Publishing's thirty-five editors and twenty designers have advanced degrees and are highly specialized in certain writing genres, for example editors with MBAs are employed to handle business titles. Designers are also matched with their specialty fields, such as Science Fiction or Romance. American Book Publishing provides a unique approach to author/editor collaboration that takes on the average six months of interaction to refine an initial manuscript into a high quality publishable book product. Professional copy editors do the final revisions and talented designers create book covers that often exceed the author's fondest dreams.
With a professional and highly specialized staff of writers, designers, marketing and support staff, American Book Publishing is able to publish 50 - 80 books a year and is able to accept unsolicited manuscripts.
