Elizabeth Newton is a widow of fifty when ten–year old Gretchen Ross moves in next door. Elizabeth at first finds Gretchen—and her two younger siblings—pretty hard to take. They’re grinds and show-offs, more interested in conjugating verbs than in playing games, and their social skills are minimal. But when Elizabeth needs help looking after her son's puppy, Gretchen volunteers and a friendship that is life changing for all of them begins to grow.
