June 8, 2005 (Press Release) --
San Francisco, CA -- Just by going to camp this summer, six teenagers will help ensure that children with cancer have the chance to do the same. Six teens from across the United States (CA, IL, MA, NY, TX) will embark on an eight-week biking expedition with BikingX on June 20th to raise money for Camp Quality USA. The group will leave from downtown San Francisco and ride to Virginia Beach, Virginia for their fundraiser. Camp Quality is a non-profit volunteer organization which has provided free, weeklong camping experiences to thousands of children with cancer and their families since 1986.
The BikingX Coast-to-Coast tour is aiming to raise $50,000 for Camp Quality USA through donations and on-the-road fundraisers. Along the way cyclists will make visits with Camp Quality campers. This will be the 2nd anniversary of the BikingX partnership with Camp Quality, USA. BikingX, founded in 2000, based in Asheville, N.C., is dedicated to running the highest caliber cycling and multi-adventure trips for teenagers.
"This past year, I learned that two of my close relatives are afflicted with cancer," said high-school sophomore Eddie Benjamin, one of the riders. "As a result, I’ve decided to bike across the United States in an effort to raise money for Camp Quality, USA."
Aryeh Canter, a 14-year old San Francisco resident, said "I am grateful to have the opportunity to take the trip of a lifetime and to forever touch the lives of children with cancer in the process. This adventure is more than the personal challenge of riding my bike across the country; this is a chance to give back to the community."
Unlike most cross-country tours, the participants will be responsible for not only working successfully within their own group out on the road, but also for enthusiastically attracting support from the media, community groups, and interested individuals along the way. While both physically and mentally challenging, the reward of making such an incredibly generous contribution will create an enduring life-long appreciation for volunteer achievement and service among each participant. The group will ride through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, and Kentucky, ending their tour in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Show your support by attending the BikingX Coast to Coast Launch 9am Monday June 20th at Justin Hermann Plaza in the San Francisco Embarcadero. Ride along with the group on its first mile, meet the riders, or make a donation to support their cause. Call 800-654-5957 with questions or for donation and sponsorship opportunities.
