June 27, 2005 (Press Release) --
Moviefone fest sports shorts, competition
Monday June 27 2:18 AM ET
More than a dozen shorts, featuring the likes of Jon Stewart and John Stamos, will get their online debut as part of the Moviefone Short Film Festival, beginning Monday at http://www.moviefone.com/shorts.
The online festival and competition strongly favors comedy and includes live-action and animated shorts sourced from such major film festivals as Sundance and Tribeca, said Steven Yee, VP and general manager of America Online-owned Moviefone.
"Short films are an underappreciated and underexposed art," Yee said, "and Moviefone wants to be an advocate for both great features and unsung heroes of the short-film world."
Among the presented shorts are "The Office Party," starring Stewart, Dave Attell and Tate Donovan; "I Am Stamos," with Stamos and Clint Howard; and Paul Taylor's animated "In the Rough."
In addition to the showcased 15 titles, Moviefone is issuing an open call for filmmakers to submit entries to an ongoing short-film competition.
In October, a panel will select a winner from those rated highest by consumers. The judges include Larry Auerbach, associate dean of the USC School of Cinema-Television; producer-director Jon Avnet ("Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow"); and Lions Gate Entertainment CEO Jon Feltheimer.
There will be one prize for the film chosen best overall, along with a separate prize each month.
