June 28, 2005 (Press Release) --
Tustin, California Sunday, June 26th, 2005 - Exhibit-up Gallery is proud to present: Viredo's "Girl, Woman, Temptress, Goddess", on view from July 22 to August 26, 2005.
Viredo is one of only three living members of "The Eleven," a group of Cuban abstract expressionists that made their mark in mid-1950s Havana. Viredo's paintings carry the elements of a storyteller (sometimes derivative of Picasso's Guernica) and of an identity rooted in particular circumstances: the colorful people of his childhood with their African roots, political upheaval and eventual move away from his homeland, and the theatricality of his adopted city, Los Angeles, home of movie stars and make-believe.
In this showing of "Girl, Woman, Temptress, Goddess" one can see the many facets of Cuban women from their heritage of Indian, Spanish and African descent, to their seductive, exotic and romantic nature. The scenery and color that surround these women adds to the menagerie of symbols and stories of the artist's childhood. The Cuban woman as seen in the eyes of the artist!
The inspiration for much of Viredo's work also comes from the Afro-Cuban culture of his childhood in Regla along with the many hours spent at the national library located at the "Capitolio Nacional". Viredo has often stated that he's no expert on Afro-Cuban culture, but just a witness to what he experienced as a young man.
"In my art," he states, "I try to communicate my amazement at the diversity of humankind that I see around me. “Sometimes I try to show the relationship between music and the visual arts. Other times I try to pay homage to the great artists of the past. I always return to the rich canvas of my childhood where so many elements blended together in so many colors and sounds."
The Exhibit-up Gallery invites you to meet this great artist in person during the Artist Reception on Friday July 22, 2005 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. It will be an unforgettable experience to meet one of the three living artists from the original "Grupo los Once". A group of talented artists who first came together over 50 years ago. The gallery is located at 13011 Newport Ave., Space 206, in the city of Tustin, California.
