June 30, 2005 (Press Release) --
NAION (Non-arteritic Ischemic Optic Neuropathy) is an ischemic process, stroke-like damage to the optic nerve that blocks the blood flow which results into permanent blindness. This condition of vision loss can be partial or complete.
In United States, some cases of NAION have been reported after using anti-impotence drugs such as Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra. All these drugs are being scrutinized and FDA is investigating the reports of those men who have been affected after taking the anti-impotence drugs.
Dr. Howard D. Pomeranz, from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis said, "NAION is a much more serious condition because it can lead to permanent vision loss and at this point, there are not enough data to support performing an ophthalmologic exam on every patient being considered for Viagra treatment.”
FDA spokeswoman said, "The FDA has 43 reports of NAION among the impotence-drug users: 38 for Viagra, four for Cialis and one for Levitra".
Due to this sudden side effect, Cialis by Eli Lilly & ICOS has added a note to the drug's label for awareness and FDA has asked Pfizer to do the same.
John P. Mulhall, Director of the Sexual Medicine Program expressed that it is entirely feasible that men who are at risk for Naion are at risk for erectile dysfunction and, in fact, are the people most likely to be using Viagra.
Blurred Vision for time being is the common side effect of Viagra, Cialis and Levitra which occurs after taking these pills.
The updated investigation reveals that this may occur in those men who are diabetic or heart patients. Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis all basically work the same way by enhancing and maintaining the blood flow to the penis hence millions of men find these drugs useful.
FDA is taking this issue very seriously and is in discussions with three giants companies of anti-impotence drugs (Viagra, Cialis and Levitra) about the standard and class of these medications. FDA is probing all these drug companies and these drugs are under consideration. However, no evidence has been found that could indicate the relationship between ED pills and cases of NAION.
Viagra - Pfizer spokesman, Daniel Watts said, "Viagra has been used by 23 million men and 103 clinical trials of Viagra have not had any reports of NAION. We would say that there does not appear to be sufficient evidence to suggest a single identifying association of these events with Viagra therapy,” says Watts. “We rest with all the data and will continue to monitor the database.”
This becomes new challenge for ED drug manufacturers as Viagra – a leading worldwide anti-impotence drug of Pfizer, Cialis – Eli Lilly ICOS, Levitra - GlaxoSmithKline and Schering Corporation are already in competition. Due to recent vision losing reports, it affects the stock exchange of New York and the shares of Pfizer closed down 55 cents, or 1.9 percent, at $28.35. Cialis, which is made by Eli Lilly & Co. Lilly, shares lost 5 cents to $59.05.
