Texas--New Authors Beware: Even if your book is highly praised, don't count on it being sold in book stores.
Eric J. Obmann, author of the novel, October 31st , was denied a book signing event this past June by a Burleson, Texas Borders book store because, ‘ the novel is non-returnable and would go against corporate policy', even though Amazon.com, who teamed up with Borders, include the book on the Borders Website.
Obmann was bewildered. "I believe Borders is in business to sell books, not make money by sending books back to the publisher for a refund. I was willing to bring my own books for the event or do whatever it took to work with them, but they wouldn't listen."
A tentative date was reached and set for mid-June, but was canceled the week before. Obmann had asked two Texas radio personalities to attend the event, as well as announcing it over the air during the month of May.
October 31st ,a mystery/horror novel is published by PublishAmerica.[www.publishamerica.com]
They announce on their Wesite that ‘ PublishAmerica is proud to say that all book sales are final and are non-returnable.' and that ‘the issue is not whether it is returnable, but if it will sell.'
With a ‘highly recommended' rating from Shirley Johnson of the Midwest Book Review and a number of well-wishers on the novel's Website,(www.oct31.cjb. net) this would seem not to be one of the main obstacles regarding the denial.
On the bright side, Sammi Martinez of KZPS, a classic rock station in Haltom City/Fort Worth, relayed to Mr. Obmann that, ‘ You wrote a book. That is more than most people do in a lifetime..."
Mister Obmann has set another book signing event at a Barnes & Noble in Downers Grove, Illinois in the beginning of August.
