July 3, 2005 (Press Release) --
Creston Valley in British Columbia is one of the hidden gems nestled beneath the Canadian Rockies in western Canada. The veritable Shangri La is a fertile valley of reclaimed flood plain farmed since 1935. Hay, potatoes and asparagus now flourish alongside grain fields in this picturesque rural countryside.
While many visitors naturally drive Creston Valley's many scenic routes or stroll the nature trails, the Millikans brought along their bicycles to cycle the back roads and byways. "Rolling over a knoll, we gaze on cherry, apricot, apple, plum, peach and pear orchards covering bench lands. In the Fruit Basket of the Kootenays, stands offer assorted produce, honey, sweet apple cider, and handicrafts," writes Rick Millikan.
Naturally biking through Creston Valley works up a thirst. That is quickly remedied by the world famous Kokanee Brewery with its Big Foot (Sasquatch) marketing mascot. Of course, no tour of the brewing plant would be complete without a sampling the final product. Two different ales later, the Millikans are ready to ride again.
Over the next couple of days, there is still lots to cycle and see. Among the highlights is a federally-protected wetland. At Creston Valley Wildlife Centre, the Millikans visit the natural museum, meander boardwalks, climb observation towers, and arrange to canoe its waterways.
"An estimated 265 species of birds, 50 species of mammals and 30 species of fish, reptiles and amphibians dwell amid its 17,000 acres. Painted turtles sun on logs in the nearby pond. Muskrats swim in surrounding sloughs. Brightly hued woodpeckers march up pines tapping out buggy meals. Screeching osprey hover, then dive for fish," observes Rick. "Having communed with nature, we return to town."
He concludes: "Cycling the quiet scenic roads leading to a variety of historical, super natural and tasty treats, we well appreciate why discerning people … and beer-swilling sasquatches … choose to live here (in this Canadian Shangri La)."
