Evaluator Turns Consultant to Help Grant Writers Obtain Funds
There are billions of dollars in grants available for practically anybody and everybody and Don Myers wants to help everyone get their share.
Myers, who heads RCS Grant Writing Systems, offers a seminar entitled “The Joy of Writing Grants”, that is directed towards helping employees of non-profit groups, schools and government agencies write successful grant applications.
“For 20 years I managed grant programs that flowed through the Arizona State Parks Department, acting on requests from municipalities and other agencies for funds available from a myriad of federal sources,” said Myers.
“So, who better to teach people how to write successful grant applications than a person who evaluated such requests and made recommendations on which requests to fund?”
Following his career with the state of Arizona, Myers founded a consulting company, Rural Consulting Services, to help out-of-the-way municipalities, counties, and private groups to properly apply for grant monies. After he developed what he calls his “system”, he decided to put it in seminar form and offer it at one-day seminars across the country.
“The problem with most evaluators is that they retire and play golf and don’t offer to share their expertise,” said Myers, an Albuquerque, N.M. native now living in Scottsdale. “I think it is a joy to write grant applications. Most people take one look at an application’s guidelines and freak out. But if you break it down and understand it, the process is fairly simple.”
Throughout his career Myers has evaluated more than 10,000 grants and now, over the past four years, has trained more than 3,000 people on how to properly apply for those grants.
In addition to his on-site seminar, Myers also has produced a book on his program as well as a DVD that mirrors his seminar, which features innovative and proven techniques to improve anyone’s skills in preparing more successful grant applications.
Success stories and kudos abound regarding Myers’ Joy of Writing Grants Seminar. Here are comments from two individuals:
“Using the tips and techniques I learned (from the Joy of Writing Grants seminar) resulted in the Town of Queen Creek getting a grant award of $499,000,” said Creighton Wright of the Town of Queen Creek. “This is the largest grant the town has ever received.”
“The grants training I took from Mr. Myers was the kick-start I needed to writing grants,” said Brian Fellows of the City of Mesa. “Shortly after I completed the course I got my first chance to put my knowledge to use...(resulting in the city being) awarded approximately $500,000 in federal funds for bikeway development.”
Although the seminars are open to anyone, they are designed for employees of cities, counties, states, school districts and non-profit organizations.
The one-day seminar costs $195 for professionals and $145 for charitable groups. Group rates are available on request.
