Lemony Snicket's Unfortunate Events just the ticket for getting kids reading this summer

(Free-Press-Release.com) July 7, 2005 -- The fantasy books written by Daniel Handler under the pen name Lemony Snicket have generated a huge fan base among young people. �There are dozens of websites devoted to all things Snicket�, says Carrie Lauth, webmistress of one such site. �I don�t think even Handler himself was prepared for the reaction his books got among young people, especially those who weren�t big readers before they discovered the series.�

Especially since the release of the movie based on the series, parents everywhere have been picking up copies of the woebegone tales of the Baudelaire orphans to get their kids to turn off the Nintendo.

�Parents and educators seem to really like the series too...in fact there is a huge Snicket following among 18-30 year olds.� Homeschoolers and teachers are using the books in their curriculum. �The books are witty, intelligent and edgy, reminiscent of classic author Roald Dahl.�

Popular children's author and former elementary teacher Jon Scieszka, concerned about statistics showing that boys don't seem to read as much as � or as well as � girls, queried teachers and parents to find titles that "boys really like." He suggests books that make boys laugh and that scare them a bit too. The Series of Unfortunate Events books fits the bill perfectly. Handler�s many allusions to other famous names, places and events in classic literature can also spark an interest in reading.

Lauth�s own young son enjoyed hearing the books read aloud to him �for hours at a time�it was wild, because he didn�t have that kind of attention span for other chapter books.�
