July 10, 2005 (Press Release) --
With Patrick Kielthy as master of ceremonies and serenaded by The Corrs, celebrities and champion golfers lashed out millions for glittering prizes. An Aston Martin sold for 600,000 euro but a painting by Peter Curling, titled Tiger’s Magic Potion, was secured with a bid of two million.
A Porsche was auctioned for 450,000 euro and Bono’s leather jacket worn to the Grammy Awards has to be the most expensive in the world, selling for 400,000 euro - although it did include the handwritten lyrics to U2’s Vertigo in the Grammy envelope.
Under the star-lit marquee in Adare Manor grounds, dressed in chiffon and flowers, a bid for 500,000 euro secured entry for 10 people to the Ryder Cup. A round of golf with Ernie Els in South Africa set one ambitious golfer back 300,000 euro.
Tournament winner Harrington was also in radiant form. "It’s just fantastic what JP has done, brought together a great assembly of players for a great cause. Adare has got to be one of the most beautiful courses in Ireland. It’s a majestic course, a great venue for this.”
Celebrity names who paid thousands for the privilege of participation were ubiquitous: The OC’s lead man, Peter Gallagher, built a warm rapport with fans and declared Roscommon roots.
Tico Torres, guitarist with Bon Jovi, was out and about as was Eddie Jordan, snooker supremo Ken Doherty, Keith Wood and footballing legends Michael Owen (on Harrington’s crack team), Niall Quinn, Gordon Strachan and Alan Hanson.
Harrington partnered Real Madrid star Michael Owen, jockeys Tony McCoy and Mick Fitzgerald on day one and on Tuesday, the Charleville Community Care team of Mike and Pat Potter with Danny Deady, to win by three shots.
Looking back, Pro-Am co-ordinator Vincent Finucane was in buoyant form as to how the event unfolded - "smoothly, excellent, all day."
"I don’t think any other course in Ireland could host the numbers we had here on Monday, 21,000 and an estimated 28,000 on Tuesday”, he pointed out. "The Army did fantastic work in organising the shotgun shell starts at 8am and 1.30pm each day.

The auction and banquet for 1,200 people that closed the JP McManus Invitational Pro-Am raised several millions more for Mid Western charities to top the 20 million euro raised by the tournament.
