For centuries, the Lux-crystal produced from the sap of the sacred Tana-Trees has provided light without fire, as well as power and affluence to the High Mistresses of the Pentanet and the graft-accepting Lords of the Kingdom of Tana-Rae. Peace and prosperity permeated the realm. That is until the Kingdom of Tana-Rae declared war upon one of its neighbors for passing a tariff on the precious Lux-crystal. The displeasure over this aggression may have gone unspoken had it not been for Naqus Duujul, the newest Lord of the Council. Proclaiming that Tana-Rae has lost its way, Naqus means to spearhead a movement from within the Council to remove the High Mistresses as keepers of the Luxwood, thereby robbing them of their influence and riches. Meanwhile, the Queen is dying and her daughter, Princess Aethelania, is poised to become Tana-Rae's new matriarch. Fearing that Naqus will petition to become Aethelania's King and use the throne to succeed in his cause, the High Mistresses turn to Aengus Terae, the Supreme Commander of the Queen's Army, and pressure him to seek the Kingship. Aside from having no desire to be a Pentanet pawn, Aengus has another problem. He is deeply in love with his concubine, and has no intention of casting her aside...
