July 16, 2005 (Press Release) --
We live in a society where the average woman is a size 14, yet we are bombarded with commercial images and messages telling us that if we are over a particular size or carry some extra pounds, we are unacceptable. A lack of self-esteem is one of the major causes of suicide, addiction, teen pregnancies, eating disorders, isolation and fear amongst our teen girls. We need to stop the madness! Aromire states, “It’s time society realizes and accepts that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. When teen girls see positive images and role models they begin and continue to feel and look good.
This landmark event will take place at One West 29th Street New York, NY from 10am -1pm. Registration is $30 Bring a friend and save $5 each. Plus-size teen girls will come together to discuss relevant issues; celebrate their beauty and talent; meet new friends and receive exciting prizes which includes a chance to win a back-to-school shopping spree. Although BIG Girls Make It! is passionate about promoting self-esteem and self-acceptance, they are not against healthy living. Aromire states “Having good health is not absent from our programs or messages; however, we understand good health does not necessarily mean you should be a size 2. It is about feeling and looking good even when you carry a little extra.”
About BIG GIRLS MAKE IT
Established in 2003, BIG Girls Make It! is an organization committed to building and repairing the self-esteem in plus-size women and teen girls by providing a platform that will positively highlight their beauty, talent and success. “We are fearfully and wonderfully made” says founder and motivational speaker NaTishia Aromire. The BIG Girls Make It! movement is about encouraging plus-size teens and women to believe in themselves, imagine their success and go for it!”
The BIG Girls Make It! founder NaTishia Aromire has struggled with her weight as a teen but never allowed it to hinder her from reaching her dreams. Aromire believes society is always talking to the plus-size community about their physical person, so, someone needs to speak to their heart and soul. “We have passions, goals, dreams, talents and voices. However many of us have allowed our weight to overshadow who we really are.”
